Hand and Elbow Conditions We Can Help With:

At Lisburn Physio, we understand how hand and elbow pain can make daily tasks like typing, playing guitar, or gardening difficult. We’re here to help you move comfortably and get back to doing what you love—pain-free.

Tennis Elbow

It is a painful condition caused by repetitive strain or overuse of the muscles and tendons in your forearm. It’s not just a problem for tennis players; any activity involving repetitive gripping, lifting, or swinging can lead to this condition. The pain usually occurs on the outside of the elbow and can make tasks like gripping a racket, shaking hands, or even lifting a grocery bag uncomfortable.

Why it happens: Tennis elbow is often caused by repetitive motions, such as those used in sports like tennis, or in daily activities like typing, lifting, or even gardening. Over time, these repetitive movements put strain on the tendons in your elbow, leading to inflammation and pain.

How we can help: We’ll help reduce pain and inflammation with hands-on therapy and massage. Through targeted strengthening exercises, we’ll relieve strain and rebuild strength in your forearm and elbow. We’ll also work with you to improve your posture and technique to prevent future injuries.

Our goal is to help you get back to the things you enjoy—whether it’s hitting a perfect serve in tennis, lifting with confidence at the gym, or simply enjoying a pain-free day-to-day life.

Aftercare plays a crucial role in preventing future injuries. Once you’re discharged from physiotherapy, our team will refer you to our inhouse sports massage therapist to help maintain your progress and keep you on track. Preventing the injury from returning is just as important as recovery.

* For more specialized treatments, book an appointment at our Belfast Clinic, where we focus exclusively on injury prevention. We offer advanced techniques like sports massage, which utilizes deep tissue techniques to reduce tension and pain, and scraping (IASTM), which helps reduce inflammation in tendons and promotes healing.

Golfer’s Elbow

Is a condition where the tendons on the inside of your elbow become inflamed, causing pain, tenderness, and weakness. This injury can make simple tasks like gripping a club, shaking hands, or carrying shopping bags challenging. Activities that involve repetitive wrist or arm motions, like golfing, tennis, or even typing, can aggravate the condition.

Why it happens: Golfer’s elbow is typically caused by repetitive motions that put stress on the tendons in your forearm. Whether it’s from a repetitive sport like golf, or from overuse in activities such as lifting or typing, the tendons in your elbow can get overstressed, leading to pain and discomfort.

How we can help: We will help treat your injury by using hands-on techniques to reduce pain, improve movement, and strengthen the muscles around the affected area. We will guide you through specific exercises designed to enhance
flexibility, restore function, and prevent future injuries.

Our goals are for you to be able to play your best round of golf, hit your tennis shots with ease, and carry out everyday tasks like lifting and gripping without pain or discomfort.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when the median nerve, which runs from your forearm to your hand, becomes compressed at the wrist. This can cause tingling, numbness, and weakness in your hand and fingers, especially when gripping or typing. It can make everyday tasks like holding a phone or using a keyboard painful and difficult.

Why it happens: It often happens due to repetitive movements, like typing for long periods, using a mouse, or any activity that puts strain on the wrist. Other factors, such as injury, pregnancy, or conditions like diabetes, can also contribute to carpal tunnel syndrome by affecting the nerve.

How we can help: We focus on reducing inflammation and improving the mobility of your wrist and hand through manual therapy. We will guide you through exercises to strengthen the muscles around the wrist and improve nerve mobility. Additionally, we can teach you ergonomic techniques to prevent further strain while working.

Our goal is to help you regain full function of your hand and wrist, so you can get back to typing, using your phone, and performing everyday tasks without pain or discomfort. You’ll be able to enjoy a pain-free day and feel confident in your ability to move without limitations.
